Design problems of bridge opening that is large enough to permit passage of given design flood, depends on entire flow regime in problem reach; regime is analyzed to insure that cumulative effect of backwater from several bridges in series does not result in excessive river stages; it is shown that, in reach where bridges are widely spaced, their minimum permissible size can be less than in reach where stream crossings are closer together; normal water depth assumed under bridges discussed is about 6 1/2 ft and culvert section is 25 or 30 ft wide.
