Investigation of cracks in highway bridge beam junctions indicated cross beam torsion as cause of these cracks; computation of cross beam effect confirmed critical influence of torsional moments in cross beam connections with longitudinal beams, due to one-sided disposition of loads; bridges with variable traffic direction, and those with one of lanes closed to traffic, are subjected to considerable cross beam torsions and maxima stresses in cross beam connections.
