Mathematical model based on finite element method of stress analysis was used to calculate stresses and displacements surrounding open pit mine in gravity-loaded rock mass; comparison of finite element solution for semicircular notch in gravity-loaded plate with theoretical solution for semicircular notch in plate under uniform compression parallel to free boundary demonstrates inapplicability of latter method to openings at free surface of gravity-loaded medium; high stress concentrations are formed at irregularities along boundary of open pit in gravity-loaded continuous competent rock.
