Thorough stress-strain tests at copper mine in Michigan were used to show how water weakens roof strength; it is observed that almost all of roof failures are in compression, beginning with low-angle shears rather than tension cracks; most of failures occur several days or weeks after roof has been exposed; failures are predominantly in humid and partly seasonal areas; failures are progressive -- newly exposed layers failing successively until high arch is formed; stresses are directional, producing failures more often in openings of certain orientation.
