Some design and construction features of Cruachan pumped storage project
Features of design of 150 ft high buttress dam and its hydraulic gates for 400 Mw pumped storage project; grouting procedure and strain measurements undertaken, underground construction, involving excavation of over 80,000 cu yd of diorite in machine hall and about 220,000 cu yd in associated caverns, tunnels and shafts are described; reference is made to exploration carried out and to construction problems and methods; design of high-pressure penstocks, surge chambers, crane support structure and draft tube gates are featured.
