Hydraulic downpull forces on large gates
General studies were made to determine design parameters for hydraulic downpull on downstream-seal, roller-mounted gates located in entrance transitions of large conduits; gate lip extension to leaf thickness ratio of 0.55 was selected as optimum compromise between structural and hydraulic considerations; data are presented in both dimensional and nondimensional form on effects of gate leaf and gate shaft geometry and of air vent size; effects of air admission were also determined; data were used to obtain downpull values for San Luis Dam 17.50 × 22.89-ft outlet works emergency gates.
