Khadakwasla, oldest masonry dam in India
Historical review of 80 yr old Khadakwasla Dam; built of uncoursed rubble masonry in lime mortar and of slender section compared to present day designs; during its service, considerable modifications were made to spillway arrangements so as to increase storage; it had withstood higher flood levels than as designed until 1961; in 1961 it failed under abnormal flood conditions caused by breach of upstream dam; it has since been restored; opportunity was taken to study properties of materials of construction by extensive testing and by comparison with present day masonry; tests have indicated that there is little or no deterioration in properties of uncoursed rubble masonry.
