Design criteria adopted for Tarbela dam situated in seismic zone
Design criterion adopted for earth and rock fill dam proposed to be located in area which is seismically active; proposed dam is supposed to be largest dam in world; it is to be built on water saturated alluvium which is as thick as 180 m; due to its unique situation this dam presents challenging problems of foundations; slopes of finally adopted section have been vigorously analyzed and safety factor of 1.0 has been achieved; characteristics of materials used and method of analyses are described and conclusions drawn.
