Interpretation of results from vibrating-wire strain gauges in fresh concretes
Program of tests concerning creep, shrinkage and temperature movements in highway bridges was conducted by Bridges Sec of Design Div of Road Research Laboratory in England; characteristics of vibrating-wire gage are described; results show that expansions take place during hydration of concrete; strain changes that occur on cooling during dissipation of heat of hydration in full-scale structures and cracking caused by differential strains on cooling are discussed; it is shown that cooling after hydration produces self-straining set of forces within concrete, reinforcement being in tension to approximately 3500 psi while concrete is in compression.
