Influence of foundation strata on earthquake response of buildings
Foundation strata that support structure affect its earthquake response because they affect its dynamic characteristics, affect characteristics of surface vibrations engendered by earthquake motion, influence possibility of quasi-resonance response build-up and type of foundation provided for structure; each of these factors is discussed and it is concluded that case exists for having smaller seismic coefficients for normal Indian buildings on soft soils than those specified for design of these buildings on average or hard soils.
