Evolution of large suspension bridge design
Designer of Great Britain's Severn Bridge discusses early experiments and revived project changes; box-cross-section adopted for bridge is 10 ft deep, 55 ft wide at top flange, and 75 ft over pointed ends, while cantilevered footpath and cycle-track decks bring overall width up to 105 ft; important feature of box design is its very low wind drag; this leads to considerable savings in tower design since high proportion of wind loading on deck is transmitted to tower tops by cables.
