Paper traces developments in railroad bridge construction and describes major research projects involving railroad bridges beginning in 1849; results of research into effects of brine corrosion on various metals and coatings are discussed; projects dealing with prestressed concrete spans, glued-laminated timber members, longitudinal forces on bridges and use of butyl rubber membranes as waterproofing for bridge's decks.
