Research work on variety of problems related to loadbearing brickwork and other structural ceramics in Department of Civil Engineering and Building Science in University of Edinburgh, Great Britain is described; tests of 4 1/2 in. brick walls and of 34 story-height wall panels in specially constructed 200 ton capacity test rig to examine effects of brick strength, mortar strength, eccentricity of loading and effects of interaction between floor slabs and wall panels on strength of walls; technique using 1/6th scale model bricks was developed to study lateral strength and rigidity of brickwork; ceramic shells of hollow clay block construction.
