Nature of shear resistance in reinforced concrete beams
How shearing forces in beam without web reinforcement can be resisted by beam action and arch action; former consists of combined resistance of dowel action, aggregate interlocking across cracks and flexural resistance of concrete cantilevers bounded by cracks; arch action develops by inclination of internal compression force in beam and attains its full capacity after breakdown of beam action; experiments indicate relative contribution of different actions toward ultimate capacity.
