Saving steel on heavy-duty concrete pavements
Since only function of distributed steel is to hold together faces of slab at cracks, it is obvious that, if formation of intermediate cracks can be prevented, no steel need be used; proper spacing of transverse expansion joints will practically eliminate formation of intermediate cracks and insure adequate amount of load transference at contraction joints without requiring use of dowels.
