Vertical beam method utilizes side walls constructed as simple vertical beams with supports arranged at top and bottom to resist internal horizontal pressure; designation "vertical beam" is taken from this wall construction; with such design, all of concrete in contact with contained water is in compression; simple methods are afforded for minimizing temperature and shrinkage stresses.
