Hydro-Quebec crew blasts plug to block 50-ft diversion tunnel
New method utilized by Hydro-Quebec at Outardes 4 project; rock plug was shaped above tunnel entrance, then blasted loose so that it fell into mouth of diversion tunnel around dam and closed it; trenches 40 ft deep were excavated along sides of block in 4-ft lifts; trench at back was cut through roof of tunnel; rock bolts inserted from top and bottom were to help cracked rock hold together; arched tunnel is 50 ft in diam; rock plug was to be 70 ft high, 60 ft wide and 60 ft deep, to close mouth of tunnel and cut water flowing through tunnel by 82% or 2700 cfs at time of blast.
