Main structural elements of tunnel built by Connecticut State Highway Dept are 230 precast, reinforced and post-tensioned concrete half-arch sections, each separated from its foundation and its other half by neoprene pads; half-arch sections that make up tunnel are 1 ft 6 in. thick, 6 ft wide and have chord length of 32 ft; each contains 12.5 cu yd of concrete, 2500 lb of rebar cages and three post-tensioning tendons; sections were cast in sideways position; techniques of construction and placing of prefabricated sections are discussed.
