Items of greatest interest are accuracy, bias, cost, and for postal survey, guarantee of adequate minimum response to satisfy statistical requirements; survey was conducted under auspices of Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering of University of California; postal method may be particularly useful in obtaining travel information for low-density peripheral areas of urban transportation study area, where knowledge of trip characteristics is desirable, but use of home interview method cannot be justified from point of cost and manpower requirements.
