Collapse of yielding structures during earthquakes
Effect of gravity on earthquake response of one-degree of freedom yielding structures is studied by subjecting them to simulated earthquake excitation; results show that effect of gravity is to increase significantly development of permanent set, over that occurring when gravity is ignored; permanent set increases rapidly prior to failure; response statistics for elasto plastic structures indicate that average time to failure is inversely proportional to square of ratio of earthquake strength to lateral yield level of structure.
