Experimental data obtained on model alloys with 0.25 to 1.20% C and different Cr and Mo contents indicate that dependence of hardness on carbon exists only in fully martensitic steels; in steels heat treated to only partly martensitic structure, alloying elements determine hardness; other data show dependence of notch impact resistance on ferrite-plus-pearlite and bainite components of structure of commercial steels.
