Thermodynamic analysis supported by experimental measurements show that electro-osmosis depends fundamentally on exchange capacity of soil, water content, and electrolyte concentration of pore fluid; Electro-osmosis and streaming potential are equivalent phenomena; one can be determined from other; guidelines are established for judging feasibility of electro-osmotic dewatering in soils.
