Soil-structure changes due to water-level fluctuation are described; laboratory experiments showed up to 250-fold difference in permeability between disintegrated and sand-enriched soil; using potential flow equation, it is shown that high pressures are transmitted through disintegrated soil to distances of hundreds of meters, causing formation of suffusion (piping and leaching effect of infiltrating water) channels which endanger hydraulic structures, especially dams.
