Paper describes comprehensive study of anisotropy of in situ undrained shear strength using vane test; use of series of vanes having different height-diameter-ratios has enabled approximate determination to be made of ratio between shear strength acting along horizontal and vertical failure surfaces; in addition special vane has been employed with intention of measuring shear strength along 45° inclined failure plane.
