Settlement of strip load on elastic-plastic soil
Gradual development of yielded zone beneath strip footing on idealized elastic-plastic soil is analyzed; corresponding stress and displacement fields and accumulations of footing settlements after local shear failure has occurred is also shown; factors affecting magnitude of displacements and nature of load-settlement curve are studied; development of electronic computer has made it possible to use finite numerical approximations to solve problems in soil mechanics that were hitherto insolvable by conventional analyses.
