Present system of lock return channels has disadvantage that it entails increase of masonry otherwise required and produces erosions; author describes system, depending upon use of screens and gratings, by which above objections are avoided; method has been tested experimentally by Prof. Osterlen, Technical High School of Hannover, and cost of lock arranged on new system is stated to be 25 per cent less; results are given.
