Softening point of pitch or asphalt as determined by this method depends on rate of heating; values 2 to 3 deg. lower are obtained for softening point when increment of temperature is 1 deg. per min. than when it is 2 deg. per min.; Klinger's modification of this method is recommended, initial temperature of water bath being 20 to 25 per cent below expected softening point of pitch.
