Scheme comprises about 25 mi of new trunk sewers and new sewage treatment works superseding five existing works in outlying areas; historical background and overall design of scheme is described, followed by descriptions of principal features of new main sewage system; these include design and construction of sewers in tunnel and open cut, pumping stations, inverted and true siphons, large scale pipe jacking and effluent outfall; mention is made of principal features of sewage treatment works, which include power generation from sludge gas, sea disposal of digested sludge and use of effluent for industrial purposes.
