Kinds of median barriers and right-shoulder guardrails, collapsible structures and energy-absorbing devices available are described; median barriers described are concrete, box beam, and chain-link and cable; right-shoulder guardrails described are W-section (with wooden posts and with steel posts), box beam, and cable; also described are collapsible light and sign standards, which provide alternative to installation of guardrail; new concept is energy-basorbing safety barrier; selection of median width and cross section and protective barriers to conform to variety of site conditions are discussed; collapsible structures and protective devices for rigid obstructions are reviewed; recommendations are made for design of right shoulder and embankment for urban and rural conditions.
