Minor concessions to contractors will produce more economical concrete pavements
Equipment for building portland cement concrete pavements has improved so rapidly that specifications for its use have not kept up with innovations; contractors suggest that bases be improved so they can be used for hauling; and that they be constructed of lean concrete or soil cement so same equipment can be used to build them; ramp turnouts should be designed to avoid interference with main-line paving; ramps should be of uniform width and greater surface variation should be permitted to lower cost; contractors request permission to work under end-result specifications and to use value engineering procedures.
