Field test of X-ray sediment-concentration gage
Nuclear gage, powered by storage batteries, has sensing unit in flow and recording unit on shore, connected by water-tight flexible cable; magnitude of attenuation of X-rays, provided by cadmium-109 source (about 2 mc, and 470 days half-life), was measure of sediment concentration; gage was found to be sensitive not only to suspended sediment but also to air temperature and to instrument age; standard deviation of 15-min values was about 220 ppm; gage readings, corrected for age and air temperature, gave concentrations comparable to those determined by conventional sampling of flood waters.
