Dominant discharges at Platte-Missouri confluence
Sediment delivered to river must be carried by widely varying water discharges if stable channel is to result; discharge which is equivalent of varying river discharges for channel formation is dominant discharge; one method of determining dominant discharge is presented; Platte and Missouri Rivers have been selected as example and dominant discharge calculated for each reach above and below their confluence; effect that regulation by major dams has had on dominant discharge of Missouri River, and stabilizing effect this will have on bed load transport at confluence, are described.
