Cranes team to lift radar towers upright
Technique used for tower construction is described in which 120-ton crane lifts 89,000 lb tower from top while 40-ton crane holds bottom off ground and walks toward larger crane to tilt structure vertical and set it on its foundation; operators unable to see each other use audio signals during lift; towers incorporate laminated wood columns running full height; these are joined at floor levels by wood beams, with steel-rod diagonal bracing throughout; roofs, enclosed stories, and floor decks and enclosed stairways were built in before erection; one-piece columns of taller tower are 90 ft long.
