Lime stabilizes shale subgrade
Subgrade of test section 30 ft wide and 6.5 mi long of interstate highway in South Dakota was treated with 3% hydrated lime to depth of 6 in. in effort to eliminate heaving caused by Pierre shale; tests on untreated and treated samples taken 6 wk after treatment showed reduction of plasticity index from 25.8 to 10.9% and increase of shrinkage limit from 12.6 to 34.7% as result of treatment.
