Two gigantic reservoirs
Two new prestressed-concrete water reservoirs were built for city of Springfield, Mass, with capacities of 15,500,000 gal each and diam of 320 ft; earth cover stabilizes water temperatures to 35 to 55 F range; construction procedures are described; roof system consists of 4250-psi concrete designed as 9-in. flat slab to support 2 ft of earth fill; columns at 18-ft centers support slabs; expansion joints permit differential movements when temperatures change; earth and rock embankment cover contains mostly excavated materials to reduce volume of spoil.
