Water is primary adversary of fasteners because of unstable moisture content of wood; diminished holding power and lateral strength and nail "pops" resulting from shrinkage are characteristic of smooth-shank fasteners as wood dries; in addition, certain highly durable woods, such as redwood and cedar, cause severe corrosion and/or discoloration of metal; 18/8 stainless steel nails with slender shank, moderately blunt points, countersunk heads, and annular threads provide satisfactory performance; cost is not excessive and fastener may outlast building material.
