Cements; tensile strength; requirements as to fineness of grinding; initial setting time; rapid-hardening cements are of two types; first being portland cement which obtains its rapid-hardening qualities principally from extreme fineness to which it is ground; second is alumina cement. Requirements as to selection of materials for production of first-class concrete is dealt with; sand and aggregates should be dense, hard, and clean, and where resultant concrete is subject to water action, insoluble; size of coarse aggregates; question of correct grading should be given careful consideration when making selection between varieties of sand and aggregate; Hennebique specifications and its demand for measurement of cement by weight and not volume.
