Substructure of Norfolk-Portsmouth bridge in Virginia; pile trestle bents; wood piles 65 to 85 ft. long with their upper portions encased in 32-in. cylindrical steel shells filled with reinforced concrete; river piers of large cylinder type of pile foundations; liftspan piers; caissons were built to height of 46 ft. of laminated 12×12's calked on outside, sheeted with 2-in. plank and stiffened with two sets of transverse braces; pile driver and mixer barges.
