Size and shape of underground caverns are being determined by means of new subsurface surveying tool; this tool is lowered into cavern, through communicating well bore, where it emits directional sound im pulses and measures time interval elapsing until echo, reflected from cavern wall, is received; recordings are taken at successive depth intervals, and profile of cavern thus determined.
