384 ft diam geodesic dome for tank car repair facilities was built at Wood River, Ill; 117 ft high structure was pneumatically supported during construction on 1/32 in. thick DuPont nylon balloon; calculations of safety factor of nylon enclosure; problem of air losses; pipe framework provides geodesic truss supports for 804 hexagonal steel panels, each about 15 ft across; completed dome structure rests on peripheral thrust ring and on vertical concrete piles.
