Investigations have shown that, beside aluminous cements, ordinary portland cement can be used for making refractory concretes; in order to be able to use portland cement as binding agent liberated Ca(OH)2 must be bound with aid of "ceramic stabilizers"; stabilizers such as clays, chromium ore, fireclay, quartzite, or brick-dust must be interground with portland cement.
