Particular mention is made of early Roman bridges, Caesar's wooden trestle bridge over Rhine, Trajan's bridge over Danube which had stone piers and wooden superstructure, measuring and building methods in 13th century, Palladio's truss bridge of about 1570, Chinese iron suspension bridge shown in Verazio's book of 1595, and technical advances in 17th and 18th centuries.
