Strengths of Portland cement
Following proposed mechanism of strength development of calcareous cements, relationship between "compressive strength" of portland cement and volume concentration of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) needles was deduced; mathematical expression of relationship presented is similar to empirical relationship proposed by T.C.Powers; significance and limitations of proposed relationship are discussed; tensile strength of portlant cement paste depends mainly on viscosity of liquid phase of paste, length to radius ratio, and volume density of CSH needles.
