Results of wind tunnel tests for suspension bridges
Wind tunnel tests with full models of various types of suspension bridges showed that lateral bending and lateral buckling of stiffening frame, and self-excited oscillation of bridge determines resistance of bridge against wind action; wind tunnel used in test was installed in Dept of Civil Eng, University of Tokyo; it has rectangular test section of 16.0×1.9m and maximum wind velocity is approximately 17 m/sec; it is capable of changing wind inclination over range within plus 10 and minus 10° by rotating vanes at effuser of tunnel; span of each bridge model was set to length of effuser.
