Characteristics of open tube wave attenuation system
Wave attenuation system consisting of arrays of open tubes of different length aligned with direction of wave travel and suited for fixed or floating applications was tested; new breakwater acts as scattering or de-tuning device for periodically transmitted wave energy; by contrast to conventional breakwaters protecting by reflection of wave energy or by dissipation through wave breaking, proposed breakwater dissipates major portion of wave energy by currents induced in tubes and generating turbulence at both of tube exits, by surface resistance, and by interference with energy transmission through array of tubes.
