On South African Railways several types of locomotives were inducing excessively high stresses on curved track; series of experiments and theoretical considerations on forces exerted by wheel on rail, lateral bending, and combined twisting and lateral bending; resultant equations and graphs; bending stress of 15 tons/sq in. in rail base adopted as admissible working stress on curved track.
