Mechanics of dispersion in natural streams
This paper presents method for predicting rate of longitudinal dispersion in natural streams where longitudinal dispersion is action by which flowing stream spreads out and dilutes mass of pollutant; equation is given of dispersion coefficient for natural stream; dispersion coefficient for stream may also be predicted by use of numerical solution; in addition, numerical solution describes distribution of pollutant in early stages of dispersion shortly after injection, whereas analytically derived dispersion coefficient applies only after initial convective period; use of numerical method requires same information about stream as does analytic method.
