Ventilation of long vehicular tunnels; experience gained from investigation of existing tunnels enabled evaluation of importance and efficiency of natural ventilation provided by high exhaust chimneys (Saint Bernard tunnel) or difference in levels and atmospheric pressure at tunnel exits (Mont Blanc tunnel); this effect can reduce considerably costs of supplementary mechanical ventilation systems and must be considered in their design; formulas are given for calculating variations of pressure and discharge along constant cross section air conduit provided with orifices of constant or adjustable area.
