Review is made of theoretical and empirical formulas as well as available data on air consumption and pressure; air losses due to diffusion through soils of various consistency, and means of preventing air losses at shield tail are discussed; Hewett-Johannesson empirical formulas are recommended as giving air requirement values most consistent with practice.
