Necessity of extending Sawyer's elastic limit criterion (ELC) to structures, plastic design of which is based on limit state concept, is proved; for this purpose, behavior of two typical steel structures designed according to simple plastic theory, exclusively, and designed according to latter theory associated with ELC, is studied; finally, some considerations concerning influence of ELC on plastic design of steel structures are made, and practical conclusions are drawn.
